Guide to a fairytale like town in Germany

Little did we know that we lived so close by to such a beautiful town. Rüdesheim is not only famous for its beauty but also its wine. You won’t be able to miss the massive vineyards on your way here.

Why you should visit Rüdesheim

For those of you that are too lazy to read my novel-like posts, here’s a short summary:

  • the town, landscapes and river are beautiful and can be admired without any real hiking required (trust me)
  • looks magical any time of the year
  • interesting history
  • good wine
  • cable car and cruise tour over the river will leave you awstruck

You should go. Case closed, mis amigos.

Practically, you can go around the town, Rüdesheim, and then take a small cable car to go on top of the hill where you will be able to see the Rhein river and beyond. (Btw the cable car ride was one of my favourite things because it goes right above the vineyards and let me tell you, the view is breathtaking. And I have been here several times.)

There are a proper pathways to go around on the hill, meaning that it is not a “real” hike (for those of you who imagine hiking differently. not pointing at anyone. you know who you are). You can wander into the vineyards. There are remains castles and its ruins, and this massive statue (38m tall) that is supposed to represent the union of all Germans and the beginning of the German Empire.

Then you can take a cable car down on the otherside of the mountain, and take a boat back to Rüdesheim on the Rhein River or stop by some other cute towns as the boat stops by there too. (Depending on the ticket you by, it will be in combination to the cable car ride.) Needless to say, the view from the boat is incredibly. Please do not miss out on this.

Even during peak season in July, the trails on the mountain aren’t crowded so you will be surrounded by plenty of nature and fresh air. Yes the town itself is somewhat crowded (especially during midday) with tourists coming in from all over the world, but it is nothing that should be considered unbearable.

Have you seen a round face like this before? I think not.

How to get to Rüdesheim

Of course, your usual options are driving there (yes there are parking lots), or biking there which would be beautiful along the river. But you can also take the train there. There are some directly from Wiesbaden and Frankfurt (using the S-Bahn you should be able to go with simply your Rhein-Main-transportation card).

When to go to Rüdesheim

Peak tourist seasons are of course during July and August (and holidays such as Easter), which may be crowded. But I went during July once and it was first of all, super beautiful whether and not too hot because of all the shade from the trees. So it was doable.

But I recommend to maybe go slightly before that, when it is just started to get warm and sunny like May. I went on a pretty cold April day once (I had to wear my parka ok) and yes it was windy and cold, but I liked it just as much.

(Okay maybe not a good example of what I meant by a proper trail. But there are usually proper paved hiking trails. We just decided to walk through woods. Also coconut was dead tired after that long walk half of which she got to be carried anyway. But I mean have you seen her short leggos.)

Where and what to eat in Rüdesheim

My personal recommendatio for a restaurant is Quetschkommod. The served good local food and the staff was incredibly hospitable and friendly. We loved them. There were a lot of things that we didn’t know from the Menu due to the use of local dish names but they were happy to assist us in any way.

Don’t forget to try out Rüdesheimer Kaffee (Rüdesheim coffee) which special for its shot of brandy that is flambeed in the coffee. And of course some good wine!

Hope you get to visit too and that this helps!
