Getaway to Palma de Mallorca Guide

10 years later and the post you all have been waiting for is finally here! (at least let me pretend that you were waiting) Here’s my little guide to Palma de Mallorca in the Romantic Edition (or well as romantic as the place can get I guess because let’s be honest this is not on the same honeymoon level as Santorini or Maldives). But this was a getaway for my boyfriend and me so here’s what it was like!

While this may not be such common knowledge outside of Europe, Mallorca is known as Germany’s 17th state (Germany only has 16 lol) or a German colony. And for all ya’ll dummies who did not do so well in Geography, Mallorca is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean. But why is it known to be owned by Germans? More to that after the break.

Why visit Palma de Mallorca

Why visit Palma de Mallorca and is it worth the visit. The Cathedral Seu is depicted.

The funny thing is that every time I tell people here that I really enjoyed my stay in Mallorca, they get really surprised. Amigos there has got be a reason why it is infested by so many tourists for the past 20 years (my parents used to take me to Mallorca when I was small and some things really have not changed).

The beach is absolutely beautiful. The water is so clear (especially in the morning) and the water has this mesmorising blue colour I have not seen at any beach before (and I have been to quite a few). I can’t describe it you just have to see it. While the water is calm during the day, there are waves crashing in by late afternoon and riding waves is so much fun. It’s a sand beach which is super clean btw (no algae and practically no trash. You could totally leave your phone unattended and people wouldn’t steal it (not that I tried to ’cause we are paranoid but I’ve seen people leave it casually). I guess that’s the good part about having German tourists).

I don’t know if it was because we went slightly offseason, but it seemed that 80% of the tourists were seniors. On the first night, when we were looking for a restaurant open at 9 pm, everything seemed dead. Turns out we just went in the wrong direction, as the other side was definitely alive (even if someplace was playing German folk music. You get the picture.) Only a 15minute walk from our hotel, the party district started and people were definitely having their fair share.

How to get to Mallorca

We came to Mallorca by plane to the Airport Palma de Mallorca (PMI) which is also the main airport of the Island, Palma being the capital city of the Island.

We arrived at around 7 am in the morning, which seems to be quite common, for people to leave their house at 3 am, to catch that flight. We were both just dead. I don’t particularly recommend catching a flight this early. Yes, you will have the whole day but you will be thinking about going to bed asap and it sort of ruins your day.

If you want to know more about our personal experience and some fun stories about what it was like traveling with my boyfriend, check out this post:

Transportation in Palma de Mallorca

From the airport: As mentioned before, your two options are a taxi or the bus.

Bus: You can ask the info booth for which bus to take, as well as the bus driver. A ticket from or to the airport is 5€ per person (which is kind of expensive lol). The bus line 25 can take you to the city centre (Station: La Reina) or along the beach, Platja de Palma (Direction: Arenal) which is where most of the resorts are located.

A normal bus ticket is only 1.50€! This is super affordable, but take into account that it probably took us 30 mins from our hotel to the city centre. Not to mention, we probably waited 20 mins for the bus to arrive (although Google maps told us that there was a bus every 5-10 mins).

Taxi: For the 10 minutes ride, of about 3 km to our hotel, we paid 16€. Although the taxi meter said 9€, but of course by a quick click of a button there will be extra fees. For what you may ask? My boyfriend hates getting scammed. And this is definitely what he would call a scam so he had to ask why we are paying extra fees. The taxi driver said that it’s for the “services” lmao e.g. putting your luggage in the car, calling the cab. So just be aware of that!

When to visit Mallorca

When its warm, duuuuuh! Mallorca stays warm throughout the whole year luckily, but Mallorca’s winter time isn’t warm enough to go bathing unfortunately.

Mid-summer is incredibly crowded in Mallorca and the prices sky-rocket through the roof. (like my anxiety when someone asks me about my future plans) So try to go before Mid-June or after Mid-August, and please book in advance (or last minute to snatch some good deals). But don’t do it like us and literally book everything 6 days in advance.

We went at the beginning of September, which was honestly perfect. It was mostly sunny and 30 degrees for our whole stay. (I mean actually it got cloudy sometimes which was perfect for someone who has like zero tolerance towards the sun.) I do think we were lucky because exactly on the day we left, there was a storm that flooded Mallorca.

Palma de Mallorca – Things to do

As you know, I am a very verbose person. This could become quite lengthy which is why I am going to make a quick summary list. I know some of you will not read this for the life of yours. But if you want to know more, check this post out for a more specific guide on things to do in Palma de Mallorca.

Visit in the city centre

  • Old town (Cathedral Seu/Palacio de la Almudaina/Parc de la Mar and Arabian baths and narrow streets)
  • Calle San Miguel / Plaza Mayor/ Plaza de los Patines
  • Passeig del Borne (shopping street)
  • Jardines de S’Hort del Rei (Royal gardens in old town)

Activities:

  • Palma Aquarium
  • Racecar through the Island
  • Snorkeling
  • Private Sailboat/Speedboat

To be quite honest, we spent most of our time at the beach. The longest beach there apparently, Playa de Palma. This was after all the main reason we came here, for some sun and beach (lmao did Thanh just really say sun??? who dis). But this also meant that I don’t have too many photos. But this is the most romantic you can get!

Where to stay in Palma de Mallorca

Hotel Caballero

Close to the beach! If you are looking to spend all your time on the beach, I really recommend Hotel Caballero. (pls sponser me) This is where we stayed, and we totally enjoyed it. We lived a minute walk away from the beach. The hotel gives the impression of being really modern, the staff is incredibly friendly (and speak like 10 languages) and the rooms are clean (or and cleaned daily). The pool was beautiful. They had great entertainment (like performances).

We also had half-pension or half-board. I got to say, the dinner was pretty good. They changed their menu daily although we did get slightly bored of the food by our 5th night. So I ended up eating 4 types of pasta. It’s really catered for German visitors. And breakfast … well, it’s what you would expect from a European 4-star hotel.

Address: Neopatria, 3 07610 Playa de Palma

But to make this guide well rounded: There were plenty of other hotels right in front of the Playa de Palma beach that we admired from the outside like the Iberostar resorts as well as the HM group hotels and Pure Salt Hotels. You should know in advance that these are getting ever closer to the party area of the beach.

I don’t think there are any private beaches along this coast, so you will have to pay for each beach chair or beach umbrella you rent. (8€ per day for each chair and umbrella).

Being cheap-steaks (and my boyfriend making a point of how we are paying to get some sunshine already. He says even if we want to sunbathe when we go back, we can’t), we just lay our hotel towels in the free areas (there is plenty of space) and jumped into the water! The towels were given to us in exchange for a security deposit and exchanged for clean ones for free at any time!

Where to eat in Palma de Mallorca

You can find a mini food guide of Palma de Mallorca in this post. But to put it shortly, there are plenty of restaurants along the beach. Plenty which are actually quite decent. You would pay probably around 20 to 30€ for two people. It’s not exactly cheap in comparison to the rest of Spain, but again we are in a German colony. But you will definitely feel full!

In the city centre, you can easily roam random narrow streets and find a range of places. Usually offering Tapas. Just make sure that a single dish is not 10€ because it won’t leave you full and just make your wallet cry (even if Google Reviews says it is good). But more to this here:

Anyway hope this is helpful and was somewhat (????) fun to read.

xoxo Thanh
